Main Street Wine & Gourmet opened in the Spring of 2011, the inspiration of husband and wife team, Heather Tarter and Bob Shortsleeve. After many years of planning, travel, research and looking for the right location and space, Heather and Bob landed their dream on Cape Cod, in the lovely shopping village in Orleans, MA.
“Orleans village is a great location for our goals. The store space we found was perfect – bright, open and welcoming, bigger than most boutiques.” In addition to becoming the place to buy wine in the Orleans, MA, area, a major piece of the wine program is education, inviting people to learn, through organized events, tastings, pairings, speakers. “Our store has this marvelous bonus space for tastings and events, which we now call our Wine Loft.”
A wine epiphany moment lead Heather to begin her study of wine a decade ago. Through the Court of Master Sommelier, International Sommelier Guild and the Wine and Spirit Education Trust, Heather has attained a comprehensive and ever growing knowledge and love for wine. She had long thought about creating a retail wine venue through which she could share her enthusiasm for wines, and provide access for customers and friends to a broad range of tastes and experiences. Heather’s knowledge, travels and palate form the basis on which she makes her personal wine choices for the store, offering customers the rare opportunity to find great values, high quality, sometimes newer wines from small, lesser known domestic and global producers at excellent prices.
Main Street Wine & Gourmet also has an exceptional offering of craft and local beers from across the globe, across Cape Cod and New England. Bob’s charge was to source beers not always seen or even heard of, providing unique, artisanal and local craftings that represent the new wave of American beer making while carrying the best of the old world ales and beers. Challenge met.
In addition to offering compelling wine and beer selections, Main Street Wine & Gourmet is also fills the role of go-to “everyday gourmet” food store for local year-rounders and seasonal visitors alike. This undertaking is a labor of love for the owners. They and their knowledgeable staff enjoy meeting the diverse demands of local residents and the visitors who descend on Cape Cod from all over North America and Europe each year. “Our goal is to adapt our gourmet food selections, cheeses, and gifts in response to customer requests and recommendations, as well as the seasons.”
